Inakosť – Otherness

I support the Slovak Gay & Lesbian Film Festival 2009, held from 30 September to 4 October 2009 at 35mm, a two-screen cinema of Film and Television Faculty in Bratislava. The organizer ist the Initiative Otherness, a voluntary civic initiative with a vision about coexistence in a pluralistic society.

„Slovak arts, including film culture, would be incomplete without the work of gays and lesbians. Especially now that the far right extremism is gaining strength in Europe, I believe that to lend support to the minorities, including the sexual ones, should be an obligation of every democratically thinking citizen.

It’s terrible, but in the year 2009 it is still a taboo to be open about one’s sexual orientation in Slovakia. Even our gay celebrities usually decide to stay in the closet. Film was one of the crucial media that helped to change the rainbow movement. I wish all the best to the festival and look forward to see some of the films.“ Michal Hvorecky
